While some travel couples meet by chance on the road, others find each other in totally different ways and grow into a mutual love of travel together. That’s the experience Luke and I had, and such is the case for Nikita and Harry, explorers and writers at Vagabond Stories. Below they’ve shared their thoughts on what it’s like to travel as a couple, and what they’ve learned from exploring the world together.
What’s your story?
We met 8 years ago by chance online, one chat that said “Hi, need help with my career”; and it all started then. We haven’t stopped talking since 🙂 From strangers to now being married, it’s been a journey! We have grown to love travelling, eating out, and enjoying the fine things in life.
We always loved exploring new cultures, people, places – so naturally our love for travel grew since the first time we travelled to Italy and France on our honeymoon. The thrill, adventure and the experiences that travelling gives us is the reason we continue to travel every month.
We travel together as we are each others best buddies beyond husband and wife. We are in-tune with each and know each other so well, that no one else makes a better travel companion for us!
Do you have the same travel style or different travel styles? How does this impact your adventures together?
Good question! Our travel style is mostly similar, he LOVES planning and itineraries, which is why all our trips are planned to the T. Of course, sometimes I love wandering about with no plan, but we manage to balance that. Over the years, we have almost mastered travelling together 😁
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned from traveling as partners? What makes your partnership work on the road?
Patience! Sometimes things go wrong and things are beyond our control. Which always reminds us that we need to just be patient and go with the flow. Late flights, delayed trains, weather conditions are not always the best, which helps us appreciate the journey more than the destination.
What’s the best part about traveling as partners? And the biggest challenge?
The best part is that we are each others best buddies! We share everything, and also like to go in our own worlds while travelling sometimes, whether that’s reading or just being amidst nature.
The biggest challenge is sometimes I want something else and he wants the opposite! But we manage by doing both 🙂 Understanding each other and being patient is a big virtue while on the road.
Based on your experience, what’s the best advice you have for couples who have just scheduled their first trip together?
Try to figure out each others travelling styles before-hand – are you a planner? Or do you love spontaneous travelling? The more in sync you are with each other, the easier it will be.
