Tang cocktails and learning to play shuffleboard in Richmond VA at Tang & Biscuit

Shuffleboard in Richmond VA – it’s here. Along with it, surprisingly tasty Tang-based cocktails, a fun menu of gourmet biscuits, and a whole ton of fun.

We can say it officially: there is now shuffleboard in Richmond VA. Along with it, you’ll find surprisingly tasty Tang-based cocktails, a fun menu of gourmet biscuits, and a whole ton of fun. We first ran into Tang & Biscuit‘s purveyors at a block party for nearby Vasen Brewery’s one year celebration. T&B had portable courts set up so beer-toting partygoers could get a taste for hops AND shuffleboard.

Clearly, it worked, because a few weeks later, we enjoyed an afternoon of pairs shuffleboard at Tang & Biscuit’s official grand opening, and couldn’t have had a better time. (Plus, it helps that their courts are a whole lot more level than that block party’s venue!) Long story short, we had an amazing time an can’t wait to go back for our next date night with friends.

On shuffleboard in Richmond VA and what to expect from a date night at Tang & Biscuit

The scoreboard. Apparently I’m a shark?
Shuffleboard courts and adorable wall art

After playing shuffleboard outside on an uneven parking lot, we weren’t really sure what to expect from an honest to god shuffleboard venue. When you walk in, you immediately see courts on your left, backed by gorgeous mural work. And on the right, a lounge-slash-seating area. Walk a bit further in, and you can either turn right to sit down and order at the bar, or left to make and pay for your court reservation.

Boyfriend Perspective: If you’re planning to play, the bartenders do recommend that you wait to open a tab until you’ve gotten a lane. They have servers with iPads that will come around eventually.

Each court comes with a chalk scoreboard (which, be warned, doesn’t erase terribly easily), and a bar-height table and stools at each end for your noshes. You’ll also get one tang (that’s the long stick) per player, and a set of biscuits to split between each couple. Then, once you get settled, one of the court captains will come around to teach everyone on your court about the game. From then on, it’s just you, the tang, and the biscuits. Word of warning, though, don’t be like the guys next to us who decided that trying to take out each other’s ankles with flying biscuits was a good idea…

Boyfriend Perspective: Like billiards, power is NOT the object, guys. Treat your biscuit like a lady.

Once your court time ends, you can either hang out at the bar, enjoy some tabletop shuffleboard, or head to the back game room. There, they have their portable courts set up, along with giant Jenga and a few other games.

The Tang & Biscuit menu – because the best RVA date nights start with Tang cocktails, amiright?

Bar taps with, yes, TANG
Their very pretty bar

Boyfriend Perspective: Welcome to Tang’s adult side, ladies and gentleman. The side you didn’t know it had. Pairs nicely with booze and biscuit noms. Get on the train.

Okay, before you start making barf sounds, we too had a healthy dose of skepticism around the wisdom of a “Tang-mosa” or a “Tang-quila sunrise.” But guys, we’re not looking back. Tang cocktails will knock your socks off in the best way possible. And if you decide that Tang cocktails don’t have a place in your life just yet, no worries – they still have a full, traditional bar at your disposal.

Also on offer are a variety of gourmet biscuits, and we both tried the pulled pork barbecue biscuit with sweet slaw. Aside from being a mess to eat, it was absolutely delicious. Recommended all the way around – though, if you’re in the market for dinner, we’d recommend one of Scott’s Addition’s other full-service restaurants.

Definitely a great place to have fun!

Shuffleboard, as a game, is intended for two pairs of players. That said, we’ve always just shown up as a pair and either played on our own (which, let’s be clear, is still quite fun) or been paired up with another booze-toting couple for some random competition. You can let the folks at the court reservation desk know if you’re willing to be paired up with another couple or not, so don’t fret if you’re feeling particularly introverted 🙂

While this may be a date, we do know that some dates need to include little ones, and the good news is that Tang & Biscuit has no age limit, so can be just as friendly for kiddos as it is for adults. Plus, what kid wouldn’t like using a long stick to push stuff around?

Boyfriend Perspective: Dude, that back room with pingpong and giant Jenga is just SCREAMING for kids. Or drunk adults. Same thing? Same thing.

Boyfriend Perspective: Warning to adults bringing children or a raised BAC to the court:  the courts are slightly raised and are waxed, so they’re both a tripping and slipping hazard. So, be safe.

Pin this date idea for later!

One of the nice things about living in Virginia is One of the nice things about living in Virginia is it’s pretty easy to get to anywhere on the east coast - we’ve done long weekends in Charleston, now NYC, and later this month, we’ll be in Florida. This past weekend, we had a really excellent, lowkey weekend in Manhattan, seeing Broadway shows, exploring museums, and eating some extremely delicious food.

Places featured in this video: - L’Addresse Bryant Park (for breakfast and dinner)
- The Morgan Library and Museum (note that videos are apparently not allowed inside the library, but I had already taken a few by the time a docent saw me and asked me to stop, and I gladly did. I’ve posted them here because I was NOT asked to delete the ones I already had.)
- Bryant Park winter wonderland and ice rink
- Lena Horne Theatre and the Broadway cast of Six! (Note that videos are not allowed during any Broadway show, but this couple of seconds was snagged as the cast was leaving their last encore and the lights were coming up. You’ve gotta book the show if you want to see how insanely fabulous they are!)

Love a good flowy dress photo, or a people-free vi Love a good flowy dress photo, or a people-free video from a gorgeous space. But even when you’re fortunate enough to get that content, there’s always a story.

In this case, we were both sick as dogs and also sharing this library with other guests and influencers, so we had to be as quick and accurate as we could so we didn’t ruin the visit for others.

However, even though quick + accurate and sick don’t belong in a sentence together, we still managed to have a sweet, spontaneous Beauty and the Beast moment on our visit to Wiblingen Abbey ❤️

Luke and I always joke that I don’t need his help Luke and I always joke that I don’t need his help because I’m a strong, independent woman 💪 And I suspect that a lot of women, like me, and a lot of travelers may also take that sentiment to heart a little bit. Personally, I highly value how strong and capable I can be, and I hate asking for help. But this weekend, when I was already having a horrible day and then my flight plans got completely destroyed, I didn’t act like the super capable woman I pride myself on being. Instead, I sat down at the bar of a closed sushi restaurant in the terminal and called Luke in tears. Bless this man, he booked me the next flight home (since the airline was zero help 😒) and picked a hotel for me to stay the night in - all while on the phone with me. I tell you all this just to let you know that it’s okay to need help from others, whether you’re home or traveling, experienced or not, and it doesn’t make you any less of a badass ❤️

Translating video frames over to still photos is o Translating video frames over to still photos is one of my favorite ways to get natural, low-stress photos of us when we travel. While I’ll admit I’m a bit of a ham, Luke hasn’t always been comfortable in front of the camera, so getting him to chat and goof around with me on video helped put him much more at ease. Although, did you see him hitting some poses here without me asking? I was both surprised and impressed, let me tell you! 😍

Fall in Richmond VA can be fantastic, and the weat Fall in Richmond VA can be fantastic, and the weather so far this year is proving that point nicely. So here’s a perfect date night to squeeze in before it gets chillier:
- Pick up the date night special from @garnettsrva , which includes two meals, a bottle of wine, and dessert for $33 - and they’ll even loan you a free blanket and vintage picnic basket (just make sure you return it as soon as you’re finished 🤗). They have several baskets, so shouldn’t have a problem getting one. And you can order all this ahead online, which makes this fast and easy.
(@properpieco is also an excellent meal option and it’s closer to your final destination! It IS bring your own basket, though…)
- Drive over to Libby Hill Park in Church Hill and grab one of the best seats in the house for leaf peeping AND seeing the sunset over the city.

This is very much a locals/neighborhood spot where you’ll see families with their kids, people walking their dogs, folks riding bikes and scooters, and even teens getting their senior poctures taken. Despite all this, it’s pretty peaceful and there’s plenty of room for everyone ❤️
