Big Beehive: A big little hike near Lake Louise

Little Beehive is an easy hike, they said. I’m sure it is. But we didn’t find out, because we ended up hiking Big Beehive by mistake. Here’s our adventure!

November 13, 2017 //  by Luke and Meagan

While visiting Lake Louise, the weather was perfect for a hike so we decided to give Little Beehive a try. Little Beehive is easy to find, they said. Little Beehive is the easiest hike, they said. I’m sure it is. But we didn’t find out, because we ended up hiking Big Beehive, thanks to an accident of signage and some poorly-placed ego.

After a substantial trip up the mountain to Lake Agnes and its famous teahouse, we walked around the lake a bit, then headed up a rather sketchy trail, in search of adventure and beautiful views of Lake Louise. Well, we weren’t short of either.

Boyfriend Perspective: :Sign near teahouse: “<- Big Beehive, Little Beehive, Bathrooms”, :second sign: <-Big Beehive, Little Beehive/ -> Bathrooms”, :third sign: “Welcome to Big Beehive Summit”…..WTF? I wanted Little Beehive, where was the turn??!!

The trail up, up, up

Oh hey there, sketchy trail up Big Beehive!
View of Lake Agnes from the trail up Big Beehive
That trail, though!

When you circle around the backside of the lake to get to the trail, you’ll realize that this is not the same kind of trail you took to Lake Agnes. It’s rocky, and quickly becomes full of shale, roots, and large pebbles that are easy to slip on.

As you get further up the very steep trail, you hit a series of switchbacks that are every bit as sketchy. Take it slow and be careful, especially if you’re not a super-serious outdoorsperson.

Honestly, we’re not in bad shape. We work out multiple days a week, cardio included. But this was a kind of breathless I don’t think either of us had ever been up to this point.

The up side? The views as you head up are stunning, and the area around the summit is also lovely. It makes the effort feel even more worthwhile 🙂

Conquering Big Beehive

Now THAT is a view!!
View from the – and it’s a damn good view!
This was a shared expression.
Exhausted but in a celebratory mood 😉

Well, we did it.

Downside? Almost too tired to climb down.

Upside? LOOK AT THAT VIEW.

Pro tips

Resting on the hike down.
GoT to rest on the Wooden Throne…….. ha. haha.
  • BRING LOTS OF WATER. The downside of starting your day with a small argument (one of the perils of traveling as a couple, what can you do?) is that you become a little absentminded. We left the water we’d brought in the car, and didn’t realize until we were a fair way into the trail up to Lake Agnes. We got pretty damn thirsty. Don’t be us.
  • Wear really, really good shoes. I made mistakes. I wore shoes that were comfy for a walking trail, not a hiking trail. My heels seriously suffered for it. Don’t be me!
  • Take the trail on the left. After you summit, don’t go back down the way you came. If you’re facing away from the summit, that way would be on your right. Take the trail on your left. It’s still steep, but it’s far less slippery and sketchy. That trail also takes you directly back down to Mirror Lake, so you’re much closer to the end of your hike.

LOL well, I am glad it was you not me! I wouldn’t be making it up big beehive if you struggled – I’m just not that fit. You are right though, the view down when you got to the top looks stunning

Girl, we’re not that fit either. It was sheer stupid stubbornness that that point! 😛 hahahahah

Lake Lousie is one of my favorite places to go to! I haven’t heard of Big Beehive before though, so I’ll add that to my list next time I go. You can’t beat those views of that blue/green water!

The hiking trails around Lake Louise are one of the best parts of the area, for sure. You get to to skip all the iPad-wielding tourists and just immerse yourself in nature. Enjoy it when you go!! 😀

Oh my gosh, you guys are hilarious! I loved the boyfriend commentary, “I wanted Little Beehive! Where was the turn?!” But the view of the lake was extraordinary from there! Every time I see pictures of Lake Louise, I am stunned by the beauty.

Also, I can relate to forgetting water and rarely wearing the right shoes for the situation. I don’t have hiking boots, so I’m probably doomed to be like you.

      January 13, 2018 at 12:32 pm

Hah, we bitched and moaned a LOT about having missed that turn, wherever it was (we still haven’t figured it out!!). That said, you’re right, the views made all the aching and work worth it 🙂

I love hikes with amazing views and that end views was spectacular and simply worth it – although I still would have done the hike for a different take on seeing the beautiful landscape

This looks like a lovely hike. You went to Lake Louise when it was warm enough to do this. We always went when there was a lot of snow still!

But I bet it’s stunning in the winter, too! This is one of those places I’d like to see in all seasons, if I’m honest 🙂

That view!!!!!! I’d take more slippery trails with stones for views like that! The colour of the lake looks so mesmerising! 🙂 Surely the efforts were all worthwhile. Love your captures! 🙂 Little Beehive and Big Beehive hehe:) That was amusing!

This hike definitely seems worth it! Great tip to take the left trail on the way down. I can handle steep, but after breaking my arm on a trail in September, I’m now all about avoiding the slippery trails if possible. I love Banff, so I know I’ll be making this hike someday soon!

    • Meagan

      January 13, 2018 at 10:15 am

Oh man! I hope you arm has healed nicely – but can totally understand why you’ll be taking things a little more cautiously in the near future.

Hah! Glad we’re not alone 😉 It definitely felt like a huge accomplishment, although… if it’s possible to be thirsty to the point of distraction, I think we probably were hahah

I always enjoy your post and like the way you add boyfriends perspective to it. Hike are always loveable. The Big Beehive trail looks quite tough but the views from top are just awesome. The blue lake is just Wow! and most important is you guys did it. The tips you mentioned at end for hiking are really helpful.

Such a beautiful place, I’d love to be able to include these hikes on my trips. Hopefully I’ll make it to the region some time soon.

If I’d realized how amazing it was, I’d have dragged Luke here a long time ago, that’s for sure 😉 hope you get there soon!!

One of the nice things about living in Virginia is One of the nice things about living in Virginia is it’s pretty easy to get to anywhere on the east coast - we’ve done long weekends in Charleston, now NYC, and later this month, we’ll be in Florida. This past weekend, we had a really excellent, lowkey weekend in Manhattan, seeing Broadway shows, exploring museums, and eating some extremely delicious food.

Places featured in this video: - L’Addresse Bryant Park (for breakfast and dinner)
- The Morgan Library and Museum (note that videos are apparently not allowed inside the library, but I had already taken a few by the time a docent saw me and asked me to stop, and I gladly did. I’ve posted them here because I was NOT asked to delete the ones I already had.)
- Bryant Park winter wonderland and ice rink
- Lena Horne Theatre and the Broadway cast of Six! (Note that videos are not allowed during any Broadway show, but this couple of seconds was snagged as the cast was leaving their last encore and the lights were coming up. You’ve gotta book the show if you want to see how insanely fabulous they are!)

Love a good flowy dress photo, or a people-free vi Love a good flowy dress photo, or a people-free video from a gorgeous space. But even when you’re fortunate enough to get that content, there’s always a story.

In this case, we were both sick as dogs and also sharing this library with other guests and influencers, so we had to be as quick and accurate as we could so we didn’t ruin the visit for others.

However, even though quick + accurate and sick don’t belong in a sentence together, we still managed to have a sweet, spontaneous Beauty and the Beast moment on our visit to Wiblingen Abbey ❤️

Luke and I always joke that I don’t need his help Luke and I always joke that I don’t need his help because I’m a strong, independent woman 💪 And I suspect that a lot of women, like me, and a lot of travelers may also take that sentiment to heart a little bit. Personally, I highly value how strong and capable I can be, and I hate asking for help. But this weekend, when I was already having a horrible day and then my flight plans got completely destroyed, I didn’t act like the super capable woman I pride myself on being. Instead, I sat down at the bar of a closed sushi restaurant in the terminal and called Luke in tears. Bless this man, he booked me the next flight home (since the airline was zero help 😒) and picked a hotel for me to stay the night in - all while on the phone with me. I tell you all this just to let you know that it’s okay to need help from others, whether you’re home or traveling, experienced or not, and it doesn’t make you any less of a badass ❤️

Translating video frames over to still photos is o Translating video frames over to still photos is one of my favorite ways to get natural, low-stress photos of us when we travel. While I’ll admit I’m a bit of a ham, Luke hasn’t always been comfortable in front of the camera, so getting him to chat and goof around with me on video helped put him much more at ease. Although, did you see him hitting some poses here without me asking? I was both surprised and impressed, let me tell you! 😍

Fall in Richmond VA can be fantastic, and the weat Fall in Richmond VA can be fantastic, and the weather so far this year is proving that point nicely. So here’s a perfect date night to squeeze in before it gets chillier:
- Pick up the date night special from @garnettsrva , which includes two meals, a bottle of wine, and dessert for $33 - and they’ll even loan you a free blanket and vintage picnic basket (just make sure you return it as soon as you’re finished 🤗). They have several baskets, so shouldn’t have a problem getting one. And you can order all this ahead online, which makes this fast and easy.
(@properpieco is also an excellent meal option and it’s closer to your final destination! It IS bring your own basket, though…)
- Drive over to Libby Hill Park in Church Hill and grab one of the best seats in the house for leaf peeping AND seeing the sunset over the city.

This is very much a locals/neighborhood spot where you’ll see families with their kids, people walking their dogs, folks riding bikes and scooters, and even teens getting their senior poctures taken. Despite all this, it’s pretty peaceful and there’s plenty of room for everyone ❤️
